Camino Real & San Marcos de Neve
In Hays County, east of San Marcos, ruts from one segment of the Camino Real
are still visible. In 1997, the Austin American-Statesman ran an article
about this section entitled Hays County road travels path of El Camino Real,
by Mike Todd. The ruts are located close to the first town of
San Marcos, San Marcos de Neve, which sat at where the Camino forded the San
Marcos River. Location of both the visible ruts and town site are marked
map below.

Marker at San Marcos de Neve : "Site of the First Town of San Marcos.
Known officially as Villa De San Marcos De Neve. Established in 1807 by
Mexican Settlers. The population on January 6, 1808 was 81. A flood
in 1808 and subsequent Indian raids led to its abandonment in 1812 "
